In December 2012 LANtech Communications were awarded a sizable contract by Lorne Stewart to design, supply and install a complete network cabling solution for The Student Housing Companies new student accommodation buildings at Astor House on Knotte Street in Plymouth.

Astor House has been developed in Plymouth City centre in a great location near to the historic Plymouth Hoe with easy access to both Plymouth University and the College of Art & Design.

The site comprises 522 ensuite bedrooms over three new accommodation blocks and up to nine floors ranging from individual studio rooms to shared clusters of 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 bedroom apartments. All rooms have been finished to a very high standard and include many great features including a 16MB broadband connection.

LANtech Communications provided a complete Nexans Essential CAT5E UTP LSZH data cabling solution for the entire project. The data cabling incorporated over 1500 Essential-5 outlets for use as desktop data outlets, CCTV Cameras, wired door access/control and telephone outlets, with fibre optic and multicore telephone cabling providing the backbone cabling.

The ground floor of the seven storey A-Block housed the main server room with sub-comms rooms being located on various floors of A-Block, B-Block and the Studio Block. LANtech have provided a Nexans 25year Link Warranty for the installation.

Probably the greatest challenges with this project was the sheer size and timescales involved. We had to work to numerous on-going deadlines which required careful co-ordinating with all the other onsite trades involved with the project. Every effort was made to ensure the cabling was implemented with the utmost care and diligence.

As a result of the success with the main network cabling installation, LANtech have since been commissioned to install WIFI cabling and Wireless access points throughout the site by The Student Housing Companies Internet provider ASK4.

LANtech Communications have been a Certified Cabling Partner for Nexans for over 8 years and is one of their premier partners in the South West. LANtech are a trusted network cabling provider with a proven track record in their field.
